Cairns Netball: Former Shark stands tall in Fierce netball return

They are already enjoying the view from the top two but Phoenix Fierce could boost their title credentials even further by reeling in Sharks’ 2019 premiership winner Salmui Whap-Farrar.

They are already enjoying the view from the top two but Phoenix Fierce could boost their title credentials even further by reeling in Sharks’ 2019 premiership winner Salmui Whap-Farrar.

The talented goal attack with a deadly-accurate shot took the court with the Fierce in Wednesday night’s 52-37 win over Leprechauns, filling in for the injured Jade Kennedy.

Whap-Farrar, the sister of former Gold Coast Suns listed player Kitara, had been missing from Martyn St this season, before her surprise return in the yellow and purple.

“Jeda (Nash), being a former teammate and mentor of hers, just reached out to Sal and noticed she wasn’t playing netball for any club this season,” said coach Naomi Moke.

“That’s a big loss for Cairns Netball, she’s such a young up-and-coming star of the game.

“She came in and definitely made an impact. Her netball brain was really good for us, to slow things down and bring the netball skill to the game.”

Moke said she was unsure for how long she would have the former Sharks’ services.

“We’re hoping she will stick around, we’re definitely working on that,” she said.

“It was just great to see her back on the court and an extra bonus that she was in Phoenix colours. We would love to see her playing for any club.”

Luring Whap-Farrar would be a huge coup for the Fierce, with the rising star capable of forming a lethal shooting combination with Australian basketball representative Cayla George.
