Super Netball 2020 rule changes for squad numbers, bonus points, extra time

The rules for the Super Netball 2020 season have been changed. Here’s what netball fans need to know as they watch the season unfold.

A number of temporary rules changes have been made to the Super Netball season to ensure the safety and well being of players due to the condensed season.

Delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the new season has kicked off in Queensland.

Still in play is the introduction of a two-goal super shot despite loud criticism from players, coaches and fans during the offseason.

The super shot will come into play in the final five minutes of each quarter of netball and must be put up by a shooter in the designated zone from at least 1.9m away from the post and on the edge of the goal circle.

Here’s what you need to know about the rule changes and how they will affect your team.

PLAYER NUMBERS INCREASED: The number of players permitted in each match will be increased from 10 to 12. This includes 10 full squad members and two additional players who may be training partners or other players, The additional players can change between matches according to club needs.

BONUS POINT SYSTEM: The controversial bonus point system will be suspended this season to help teams spread their player load during the condensed and hectic season.

EXTRA TIME: Introduced to decide drawn games, this will now be put on hold until the 2021 season.

Australian Netball Players’ Association chief and former Diamonds captain Kathryn Harby-Williams said the changes were important measures to protect players and the sustainability of the condensed 2020 season.

“Front and centre right now is managing the wellbeing and physical load of our athletes given the unusual pre-season they have had leading into this condensed season,’’ she said.
