SuperCoach is back for 2024

ST KILDA v NORTH MELBOURNE

Who loves an attacking half-back?

The role has become a goldmine for SuperCoach scoring and two new prospects have put up their hands to become fantasy stars in 2024.

Zac Fisher ($378k) has taken to the position like a duck to water since moving from Carlton to the Kangaroos, and on Sunday he led all players on the field for disposals (36) and SuperCoach points (132). For the opposition, forgotten former Port Adelaide defender Riley Bonner ($284k) shone in a similar role, collecting 30 disposals and booting a goal to register 127 SuperCoach points. Both could be huge bargains if they can keep up that kind of scoring in the home-and-away season.

It’s worth noting while both are playing in defence, Fisher is a forward and Bonner is a midfielder in SuperCoach.

Meanwhile, Jack Steele ($529k) could also present value after another strong pre-season outing (111 points), Harry Sheezel ($556k) could get even better than his incredible rookie year and the Saints top draft pick Darcy Wilson ($133k, 106 points) should be pencilled into your team in the midfield or forward line.

WESTERN BULLDOGS 119 d HAWTHORN 62

Panic stations for anyone looking to start CALEB DANIEL ($518k), with the nuggetty midfielder unsighted in the first half and finishing with 21 points from 45 per cent game time.

Of the top-priced guns MARCUS BONTEMPELLI ($724k) and TOM LIBERATORE ($648k) continued where they left off last year, but JAMES SICILY ($637k) had a tougher day at the office.

Rookie options SAM DARCY ($123k) and NICK COFFIELD ($123k) are also cause for alarm, with the former sitting the whole game on the pine and the latter notching just 51 points in a quiet performance, while BUKU KHAMIS ($123k) also only finished on 59.

However, Luke Beveridge has delivered a gem, with RYLEY SANDERS ($184k) picking up 30 touches and 86 points.

For the Hawks, JAI NEWCOMBE ($549k) looks let to become a top echelon premium after scoring 125, while KARL AMON ($483k) scored 96 playing a new role in defence.

HENRY HUSTWAITE ($184k) scored 84, while CONNOR MacDONALD ($381k) and CAM MACKENZIE ($271k) scored 96 and 90 respectively as cheap forward options.

ETHAN PHILLIPS ($102k) scored 56 points but could be a cheap as chips bench option down back as the Hawks look to cover a series of backline injuries.

ADELAIDE 117 d WEST COAST 50

All hail Harley. West Coast’s apparent saviour and No.1 draft pick HARLEY REID (207k) is in most SuperCoach sides, but will surely be in every serious side come the first lockout after he scored 88 across half-back and in at centre bounces.

Fellow rookie LOCH RAWLINSON (102k) didn’t quite set the world alight, with a score of just 40.

Do we have to pick ELLIOT YEO (447k) if he makes it to Round 1 in full fitness? The Eagles gun pumped out 96 from 76 per cent game time and was a regular at centre bounces.

MATT CROUCH ($490k) gave us another mid-priced option in the midfield with 114 points from less than 60 per cent game time, while teammate IZAK RANKINE ($461k) shone in his three quarters on the field with a 138 and four goals.

RORY LAIRD ($653k) and JORDAN DAWSON (647k) just ticked the legs over, with 89 and 90 points respectively.

REILLY O’BRIEN (535k) took the Eagles’ inexperienced ruck line-up apart with a mammoth 169 with 22 touches and five frees for to go with his 34 hitouts.

PORT ADELAIDE 92 d FREMANTLE 53

Do we have to pick NAT FYFE (283k)? He might not be in the running for a third Brownlow, but there was more than a glimpse of the Fyfe of old as he was running into the backline and finished with 72 SuperCoach points from 26 touches.

If you thought HAYDEN YOUNG ($525k) wasn’t playing midfield, any doubts were disproved on Friday night as the gun was the Dockers’ best player, kicking two goals and streaming through the guts.

For the Power OLLIE WINES ($433k) made hay in the middle with ZAK BUTTERS ($636k) siting on the bench for the game after an ankle tweak, finishing with a mammoth 130 points, while JACKSON MEAD ($199k) tonned up with 112.

GEELONG 83 d ESSENDON 71

If orange is the new black, then halfback is the new midfield in SuperCoach. Just ask NIC MARTIN ($492k) and MAX HOLMES ($446k). Holmes was the leading possession-getter for the Cats with 29 in his new role streaming out of defence, scoring 108 SuperCoach points. Martin had 28 disposals kicked two goals and scored 109. Martin could also benefit from a quad injury to fellow defensive distributor Jordan Ridley.

While he has been on the outer for much of pre-season, Sam Mitchell will surely be considering picking Finn Maginess for round 1 after watching DARCY PARISH ($604k) and Bombers skipper ZACH MERRETT ($650k) run amok. Parish posted a game-high 123 SuperCoach and Merrett finished with 111.

SHAUN MANNAGH ($117k) had eight disposals and kicked a goal in 27 per cent game time, scoring 44 SuperCoach points. Whether it was enough to burst his way into the round 1 frame remains to be seen though. Fellow Cats cheapie JHYE CLARK ($123k) scored 86 points from 17 disposals, four tackles and four clearances.

ZACH REID ($123k) played more minutes than any other Bomber, scoring 80.

BRISBANE 81 d SYDNEY 56

Another forward rookie has thrust his name forward as a potential SuperCoach pick with KAI LOHMANN ($150k) impressing against the Swans. Lohmann resisted Victorian interest to stay in Brisbane last year and will be hard for Chris Fagan to leave out based on his showing on Thursday night when he scored 99 points.

ERROL GULDEN ($622k) might have awkward byes to consider but the Swans star is going to be mighty hard to leave out. Gulden had amassed 54 SuperCoach points by halftime and finished with 21 kicks (which included a goal) and 133 points.

JAMES JORDON ($275k) confirmed himself as one of the best mid-price options available, stepping up in the absence of Callum Mills and the injured Luke Parker. Jordon, who had a game-high 31 disposals and 115 points, can be chosen as a midfielder or forward. The former Dees stocks were only enhanced by an injury to Taylor Adams.

MATT ROBERTS ($156k) did his hopes of a round 0 (and hopefully round 1 for SuperCoach) berth no harm, scoring 100 points from 18 disposals and six intercepts.

BRODIE GRUNDY ($481k) has been one of the most popular players of the SuperCoach pre-season after his switch to Sydney but an underwhelming display against the Lions will cause doubts for many coaches. He tallied 27 hitouts, nine disposals and 65 points.

GWS 105 d GOLD COAST 61

ALEX SEXTON ($133k FWD) has officially bolted into must-have territory after showcasing how prolific he can be playing in the Suns’ back half. Sexton had 67 points by halftime against the Giants and has moved to the head of a stacked queue of forward rookie options by finishing with a game-high 126. Barring a Charlie Constable-like disaster, he should be a DEF-FWD by round 7 too.

TOBY GREENE ($508k) needs to be seriously considered for F1 after blitzing the Suns. The Giants have last year’s bottom-two North Melbourne and West Coast in the opening two rounds of SuperCoach and Greene could be the player who gets your team off to a flyer if he repeats the type of form he showed against Gold Coast - scoring 124 points.

The same cannot be said of fellow F1 contender SAM FLANDERS ($494k) who struggled to have any impact and has given more than 50,000 coaches plenty to ponder of a score of 65.

TOUK MILLER ($545k) provided another reminder of his quality to SuperCoaches as one of the few Suns to hold their head high in a worrying display for Damien Hardwick. Miller had 33 disposals, booted a goal and scored 116 points.

JACOB WEHR ($123k) continues to press strong claims for a round 1 berth at GWS on a wing and looks a decent midfield bench option after scoring 55 points. Most of those came in the first half.

MELBOURNE 101 d CARLTON 63

The skipper of the Dees sent a clear message against the Blues.

Leave me out of your SuperCoach sides at your own peril.

Max Gawn(RUCK $583k) looked in vintage touch in the first half, dominating Marc Pittonet and booting two majors.

The first of which was a casual bomb from 65m out from goal, mind you!

Gawn was still mightily effective in 2023, but with the ruck reigns now well and truly all to himself, looms as a must-have before the season.

Meanwhile, young teammate Caleb Windsor (MID-FWD $180k) provided plenty of excitement with two superb goals, and put himself firmly in the mix for the Dees’ clash in Sydney next week.

Christian Salem (DEF $420k) presented himself as one to watch, spending plenty of time in the Demon midfield, perhaps as they look for some more polish going inside 50.

Charlie Curnow (FWD $545k) was somewhat held in another battle with Steven May but still managed to hit the scoreboard with three majors.

Orazio Fantasia (FWD $175k) wasn’t able to lock himself into Carlton’s side for sure, but did show some signs up forward.

COLLINGWOOD 76 d RICHMOND 46

Who’s still brave enough to leave out Nick Daicos (DEF-MID $650k)?

There is a school of thought it could be smart to start without the Collingwood superstar in SuperCoach and wait until after the Magpies’ bye – and a date with stopper Finn Maginness – to bring him in at a discounted price.

But any drop in value seems highly unlikely based on his last pre-season performance. Daicos’s first kick went 30m backwards to Noah Balta but after that it was pure silk, racking up 102 points before putting his feet up halfway through the third quarter.

Patrick Lipinski(FWD $389.7k) was Collingwood’s top scorer on the night while Jordan De Goey (MID $539.9k) starred – can he break into the SuperCoach premium bracket playing as a pure midfielder?

For the Tigers Jayden Short (DEF $551.2k) racked up a mountain of the ball and took plenty of kick-ins as he enjoys a return to defence under Adem Yze, while Thomson Dow (MID $254.8k) continued his excellent pre-season and Sam Naismith (RUC $123.9k) gave us a serious bench ruck option, especially if Toby Nankervis is injured early in the season.

It wasn’t a great night for rookie watchers with Finlay Macrae (FWD $152.6k) playing only a quarter and a half after coming on to replace Daicos – although he did collect 10 disposals in that time. Reef McInnes (FWD $123.9k) , Steely Green (FWD $123.9k) and Seth Campbell(FWD $123.9k) also played limited game time.
