WHO TO TARGET THIS WEEK
Midfielders v Melbourne, West Coast, Richmond, Adelaide: The four leakiest midfields throw up a host of tantalising options this week. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera scored 149 last week in his first game as a full-time mid and gets the best midfield match-up in the competition on Sunday. Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong are both great options against the Eagles, who allowed both Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto to score over 130 last week, and both Zak Butters and Ollie Wines to score over 140 the week before.
Nick Daicos gets the third-best midfield match-up fresh off 169 points against Fremantle. He scored 147 the last time he faced the Tigers, with the only possible red flag some potential attention from Jack Ross, who shut down Harley Reid after halftime last week.
Meanwhile, Zak Butters is a great shout in the Showdown – he averages 132 in his past three games against Adelaide.
And that list doesn’t include Marcus Bontempelli. The Bulldogs face Essendon on Friday night and the Bombers rank mid-table for restricting opposition midfielders, but that is over 19 rounds. Essendon has been decimated by injury and is now leaking points all over the field – scores against the Bombers in just the past two rounds include Tom Green 150, Tim Taranto 135, Toby Nankervis 132, Kieren Briggs 124, Lachie Ash 120 and Tylar Young 110. Any of the Dogs’ SuperCoach stars could deliver a captain-worthy score, but Bont is our top pick after scoring 140 against Essendon in round 10 and two 170-plus returns in his past five matches.
Rucks v West Coast, Geelong, Richmond, St Kilda: There is no Tristan Xerri to exploit the Cats match-up and Fremantle’s two-ruck strategy is unlikely to change (if Sean Darcy misses, jump on Luke Jackson, who scored 165 against the Eagles in round 3 with Darcy sidelined). Darcy Cameron has a five-round average of 118 and should score well again against the Tigers, but the big name here is Max Gawn. He recovered from a 20-point first half against Carlton to post 128 and boasts a 180 against Rowan Marshall last year (110 in round 12). A look at recent ruck scores against the Saints gives a hint at what Gawn could deliver: Brodie Grundy 154, Lloyd Meek 140, Sean Darcy 117/Luke Jackson 116, Darcy Cameron 156.
Defenders v Gold Coast, West Coast, Fremantle: Dayne Zorko scored 160 against the Suns last year but it would be a brave move to back him ahead of the names mentioned above. Tom McCarthy gets a positive match-up for defenders and pencil in another good score from Jordan Clark.
WHO TO AVOID THIS WEEK
Midfielders v Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hawthorn: The two most restrictive midfields this season go head-to-head in the Q-Clash. When these teams met in round 8 the Lions had a clear edge with Matt Rowell scoring 53, Noah Anderson 105, Lachie Neale 124, Will Ashcroft 130 and Josh Dunkley 109. The Western Bulldogs are the third-most restrictive team for opposition mids, which is not what Essendon fans wanted to hear.
Rucks v Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne: Kieren Briggs has hit form since returning from injury in round 17, scoring 141, 114 and 124. But those scores came against three easy match-ups – Vigo Visintini, Rhys Stanley, Matt Flynn – and he faces much tougher opposition this week. That recent run makes the Giants hard to judge as a ruck opponent, especially when Brodie Grundy had eight disposals and 53 SuperCoach points when these teams met 12 weeks ago. But this Brodie Grundy is a very different animal, with one score under 150 in his past seven games.
Defenders v Carlton, GWS, Essendon, Geelong: Callum Mills and Matt Roberts have a tough match-up this week, as does Bailey Dale on paper – but see recent stats against Essendon above. Geelong has conceded the fifth-fewest points to defenders, which could make for a tough day at the office for Colby McKercher and Caleb Daniel.

STATS DOSSIER: DAICOS DOUBLE ACT, BIG SUPERCOACH CBA MOVES
How often have we heard a coach or commentator lament that a team really needs two of a star player.
Well, Craig McRae has the closest thing – two Daicos brothers, who can switch positions as needs dictate.
On Sunday against Fremantle Nick split his time between his customary midfield role and half-back, while Josh played mostly in defence with some stints in the middle – usually when his brother was in defence.
Josh, meanwhile, attended six CBAs and took two kick-ins of his own.
There were some big moves at centre bounces in round 19, with arguably the biggest Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s shift to a full-time midfielder against the Cats. He has been used in the centre in bursts this season but on Sunday was at a season-high 26 CBAs (79 per cent, up from a season average of 17 per cent) and responded with 36 disposals, 10 clearances and 149 SuperCoach points.
The move also had the flow-on effect of freeing up Jack Sinclair, who posted his highest SuperCoach score since round 11 – with the help of seven kick-ins from Geelong behinds.
There were some new faces at CBAs at the weekend, too – Gryan Miers had not attended a CBA in the first 18 rounds but was at 14 against the Saints.

And injury-ravaged Essendon was forced into a new midfield mix. Andrew McGrath was at nine centre bounces (his first since round 2), Dylan Shiel attended 18, Jade Gresham nine and Archie Perkins eight.
