How Cummins footballer Adam ‘The Parcel’ Haarsma delivered one of the highlights of the 2018 season

HE’s the burly B-grade footballer from the Eyre Peninsula who has become an internet sensation thanks to a candy-selling grand final goal that even Willy Wonka would be proud of.

And Cummins’ Adam Haarsma, 27, is taking it all in his goose-stepping stride.

The forward pocket, who is also capable of a “one-stoppage burst in the guts” and who describes training as his “arch nemesis”, was celebrating Ramblers’ 13-point win over United Yeelanna in the Great Flinders B grade grand final on Saturday night when he became aware of his new-found viral star status.

“Yeah, it’s been pretty crazy actually,” Haarsma, who once nicknamed himself ‘The Package’ before teammates changed it to ‘The Parcel’, said of the Missing Link Media-produced video complete with sensational commentary from Darren Rule.

“When the original camera man shared it Saturday night I thought wowee, there has been a few views but wasn’t until Sunday arvo someone said it has gone bananas. I was well done by then as we had our club wind up on the Sunday.

“I’m surprised how far it’s gone. That’s social media these days though. Once people start sharing a video it can get to a lot of people.

“It was very overwhelming to see it get played by some decent media outlets. But it won’t be long till something else takes over and goes viral though.”

In the footage, Haarsma cherry picks a pack clubhouse-side of the centre circle, feigns one opponent on the wing, bypasses another before taking a bounce parallel to the end of the centre square line, sells more candy about 10 yards outside the 50m arc, turns in board, takes another bounce and sets sail on his right boot from about 45m, with the floater landing in the square and dribbling through for a major.

The third-quarter goal was Fox Sports’ most viewed online video over the weekend, beating highlights from the actual AFL finals.

Haarsma, who has also played footy in Adelaide for Henley and a few years at Elliston, said he was lucky to even get a guernsey for the big dance after sliding down from the A grade side — coached by former Crow Robert Shirley — which was denied a shot at back to back flags in the preliminary final a week earlier.

“I’ve had a few hamstring issues this year so was fortunate enough to qualify for the B grade,” Haarsma, who booted three of Ramblers’ eight goals in the final, said.

“B grade is a funny one as through seeding time you get a lot of farmers on the tractor instead of playing so teams don’t really shape up till the last round, but the coach always thought we were a good chance.

“It would have been awesome to go back to back (in A grade) but (United) Karkoo Yeelanna have got a pretty star-studded team and I didn’t see them getting sniffed out for the second year in a row.”

And the internet sensation’s big week isn’t over yet, with Haarmsa now mentally preparing himself for the Ramblers camping footy trip on the Eyre Peninsula’s west coast this weekend.

“I haven’t spent too much productive time at work with Mad Monday and compulsory training last night with the boys to watch the whole tape,” he said.

“Now I have to somehow gear up for the footy trip down starting tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to dry out by mid next week.”
