Australian Jewish Association CEO Robert Gregory criticises ‘lowlifes’ behind graffiti at Toorak Shule

Melbourne’s Jewish community has been left outraged by another shocking incident of vandals defacing a place of worship.

Melbourne’s Jewish community has been left reeling after a vile anti-Semitic attack on one of the city’s largest and most historic synagogues on Tuesday morning.

Toorak Shule in South Yarra has become the latest victim in a surge of anti-Semitic vandalism which has infested the city in recent months.

Vandals defaced the facility which is the headquarters of The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation with the tag “Jews Choose Themselves.”

Police have received reports of criminal damage to the synagogue but no formal complaints have been made at this time.

In wake of this latest attack, Australian Jewish Association CEO Robert Gregory criticised the federal government for “attempting to downplay” the seriousness of surging antisemitism in Australia.

“This latest vandalism incident once more demonstrates that Australia is facing a surge of antisemitism,” Gregory said in a statement sent to the Herald Sun.

“The federal government is attempting to downplay the seriousness of the antisemitic attacks that are occurring under their watch.

“No place of worship should ever be targeted by vandals.

“These lowlifes have no morals.”

The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation has been contacted for comment.
