Wet weather warning: Adelaide could cop a month’s worth of rain in a week

South Australian’s should brace for a wet week with forecasters warning of the potential for a month’s worth of rain to hit the city this week.

Authorities are warning South Australians to brace for a week of wild weather, with Adelaide set to potentially cop more than a month’s worth of rain within days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast Adelaide will receive up to 53mm from Monday to Saturday, with the worst days set for later in the week, particularly Friday where up to 15mm could fall.

But senior forecaster Tom Boeck said the hills regions will see more rain, particularly the Stirling region, which is forecast to receive up to 65mm this week.

“There’s a series of fronts moving through where there will be showers off and on but there’s going to be periods of dry weather there,” Mr Boeck said.

He said from Tuesday, winds will also increase, with gusts of up to 45km/h.

“Up in the hills there, they’re likely to get some heavier falls (this week),” he said.

He said the rain was not unusual for late winter, and at 9am Sunday, the total rainfall in July was just 32.2mm.

“The average is 66.1mm, so it’s under half,” he said,

“Particularly the agricultural community are still after a bit more rainfall and reservoir holdings are still relatively low around South Australia so we certainly could do with some more rainfall.”

It comes after the Bureau reported a “brief tornado” struck Adelaide at the end of May, bringing down powerlines and trees.

Volunteers responded to hundreds of calls for help as people woke to damaged homes and property from the weather event.
