Adelaide has recorded its coldest morning since last August with temperatures dropping to a chilly 2.7C overnight.
The city recorded the low just before 3am and temperatures hovered around 3C as the sun rose on Sunday morning.
There were even colder temperatures recorded in the northern suburbs, with Parafield Airport reaching a low of -0.4C at 6.43am.
While Adelaide shivered through its coldest morning in almost 12 months, Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jon Fischer said the climate across the state was not unusual.
“For the state as a whole it wasn’t as cold as Wednesday where we saw one of the coldest days on record from a South Australia perspective,” he said.
“But certainly driving into work this morning in Adelaide, there were plenty of cars with frost and dew. It was pretty chilly stuff.”
Mr Fischer said at some private stations across the state there were some remarkable temperatures recorded.
“For example at a private station at Balhannah in the Mount Lofty Ranges there was a low of -5C recorded,” he said.
The colder temperatures have been caused by stronger high pressure systems, which have caused clearer nights with reduced rainfall.
But Mr Fischer said BOM were expecting a more typical winter weather pattern to return this week.
“We have a front coming through on Monday and should see some more shower activity throughout the week,” he said.
“This will bring more cloud cover and we are unlikely to see temperatures fall that low for at least the next couple of weeks.”
Adelaide is set to hit a top of 15C today, before showers develop on Monday with an expected high of 13C.
More showers are expected on Tuesday, with a top of 14C before the weather dries out a little on Wednesday.
