Adelaide’s newest hotel opens on March 1 when the 123-room Vibe Hotel Adelaide debuts – as the city smashes through the landmark 10,000 hotel-room mark.
In a graphic sign of the confidence in the city’s tourism and business future it will be the 9th major hotel to open since the pandemic hit, with four more to open in the next two years and more in the pipeline.
Adelaide passed the 10,000 hotel room mark on November 22 when parts of the Realm apartment development were converted to hotel rooms.
TFE Hotels’ Vibe, on Flinders St in the East End, opens as Mad March events brings thousands of visitors to the city.
Designed by multi-award winning Australian architecture studio, Loucas Zahos Architects, the 18-storey hotel is a project from Adelaide-based developer GuavaLime whose senior architect Pasquo Cassetta said it made strong use of local artisans.
“The bottom line is that we wanted to do things in a very South Australian way,” he said.
“Let’s just say you’ll know you’re in Adelaide, not in Paris, when you visit this hotel.
“We sourced a range of specialists, including local artist and metal worker, Jeremy Herbert of Iron Edge Design who is responsible for a number of prominent artworks around Adelaide, to help breathe life into the Vibe project.
“Jeremy was commissioned to design bespoke screens and the 15m chandelier that is the centrepiece of the lobby. His exceptional design vision, especially when accompanied by the beautiful selection of Australian timbers and clever lighting installed, has created a remarkable sense of arrival that will definitely speak to guests.”
An external artwork also by Herbert is based on an original photograph of the location that is now home to the hotel.
Vibe Adelaide features a suspended bridge pool that allows guests to “swim” between the hotel and the neighbouring ONE Apartments.
The hotel has a lead in rate of $279 with an opening discount special of 20 per cent off the best available rate, room only.
An Adelaide Economic Development Agency tourism forum this week heard SA has a record $400m calendar of events this year including the AFL Gather Round and LIV golf generating record hotel bookings, international airline arrivals are back to 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels and the visitor economy is back to 90 per cent of pre-pandemic levels at $7.3bn.
