A KLEMZIG resident knew something was wrong when his home was suddenly pounded with what sounded like unusually heavy rain on Tuesday morning.
Ten minutes later, Saurin Patel was knee-deep in water in his garage, trying to salvage his belongings.
Mr Patel rushed outside just before 11.30am to find a burst water main in Reece Ave gushing water forcefully into the air.
It was the second burst water main in his street in the past four months.
“It was like a big rainy noise on my roof,” Mr Patel said.
“I came outside...and it was like a water bust in front of my house and all the people came outside,” he said.
“It was more than 10 metres (high).”
Mr Patel managed to block water from entering his home but not before his garage, which was used as a storage room, was inundated.
“It was up to knee height,” he said.
“It was all within five minutes - 10 minutes.”
MFS and SA Water crews were called to the site and the water was switched off at 1.30pm to undertake repairs.
Almost 90 residents and businesses were without water while crews fixed the pipe.
Mr Patel said a plasma television and sports equipment were among the items damaged in the incident.
He said SA Water needed to undertake more stringent maintenance checks on pipes to avoid damaging bursts.
“I have to suffer (because) I have to take the day off (because) I can’t go to work because I need to be here,” he said.
Another property was also flooded when water entered its office area.
An SA Water spokesman said the organisation’s Community Support Team was on-site to speak to those affected and deliver water.
“They will also support the two customers affected by this burst flooding to ensure they are not left out of pocket,” he said.
The spokesman apologised for the inconvenience caused by the ruptured water main.
In May, about 10 cars in a used car yard on the corner of Reece Ave and North East Rd were damaged by debris and water during an early-morning burst.
