SA weather: September could be the hottest on record

Record top temperatures for September could be broken in the coming days, with some forecasters predicting temperatures of up to 35C.

Record top temperatures for September could be broken this week as experts weigh in on the forecast.

The month started off soggy, with wild 100km/h winds and heavy rainfalls.

But the Bureau of Meteorology is now forecasting temperatures rising close to 30C to end this week and to start the next.

Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe said those could be low estimates.

“It’s going to get very hot into the start of next week, in particular in the southeast,” Mr Sharpe said.

“Most forecast models are predicting something closer to 35C, which would be indeed the September record.”

But BOM meteorologist Jenny Horvat disagreed, and said the record of 35.1C set on September 30, 1961, could still hold.

“There is still some uncertainty with Monday’s forecast as a trough of low pressure is expected to move over the metropolitan area on Monday,” Ms Horvat said.

“Depending on the timing of the change, Monday’s maximum temperature may be slightly higher or lower than forecast. However 35C is looking unlikely at this stage.”

A dry start is expected for Adelaide next week, until a midweek cold front brings cooler temperatures and some showers.

Light showers are also predicted for the South-East, including Mount Gambier, with showers also developing in the far west.

The warm change comes after drenching rains hit SA last week.

City rainfalls recorded a total of 13.4mm, with heavier rains in the southeast, including 32mm in Willunga.

The Royal Adelaide Show faced a washout after a number of nearby carparks were forced to close due to muddy conditions.

Hundreds were also left without power after damaging winds lashed the state.

The mean maximum September temperature for Adelaide is 18.4C.

Records for Adelaide’s weather date back to 1887.
