Adelaide faces 100km/h battering as BoM issues damaging wind warning

Damaging winds are forecast to batter Adelaide as Show-goers are warned to make new plans after heavy rain turned carparks to mud.

Powerful cold front brings severe weather to parts of southeastern Australia

Damaging winds up to 100 km/h will rock Adelaide on Friday according to the Bureau of Meteorology while heavy rainfall is expected to ease from morning onward.

However, Royal Show organisers have warned that some rides may be forced to shut if severe weather persists and parking options remain limited.

On Thursday afternoon, the carpark at Park 21w on South Terrace was closed due to muddy conditions and Park 22 is operating at a “very limited capacity”.

Park 23 remains open, but visitors are urged to take public transport to avoid competing for spots.

A Show spokeswoman said parking was also available at the Netball SA Stadium and free coach transfer was available to and from the grounds from 7am to 10pm.

An additional pick up point has also been added to the multistorey car park at 33 Richmond Rd.

The spokeswoman said organisers will reassess the closures this afternoon and a final call about reopening will be made on Friday morning.

It comes as Adelaide was bucketed with up to 20 millimetres of rain on Thursday morning and into the afternoon.

The Bureau told The Advertiser conditions should ease before sunrise on Friday and statewide later in the day.

Adelaide will be dry on the weekend and warmer winds are expected early next week, according to the Bureau.

A State Emergency Service spokesman said the agency is at a “high level of preparedness” and has asked responders to remain on standby.

South Australians are urged to call the SES hotline on 132 500 if faced with downed trees or serious property damage resulting from weather.
