SA weather: Chilly morning in Adelaide on first day of spring

Spring has not quite sprung yet in Adelaide, with temperatures dropping to their chilliest in more than a month.

BOM declares La Nina alert

Adelaide has seen a chilly start to spring, shivering down to the coolest temperatures in more than a month.

At 5.30am Thursday, temperatures dropped to 3.9C, which was last recorded at the West Tce weather station on July 29.

Areas to the north of the state also recorded low temps including Roseworthy, at -.9C and Ceduna at -.3C.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Tom Boeck said there was a chance for afternoon showers in Adelaide on Thursday.

“We’ve had some reports of some frost and fog around as well, so we’ve seen some of that … so unfortunately at this stage it’s not looking like a spring day,” Mr Boeck said.

“We do have possibly a couple of showers coming through in the afternoon period with a very weak front moving over the area.”

Adelaide will reach a top of 16C on Thursday, and will drop down to a maximum 14C on Friday.

Saturday and Sunday are remaining mild at 16C and 17C with another front set to hit mid next week.

“There is another change in the weather coming through about Wednesday so we’re back to 18C with some showers,” he said.

Last week the bureau has warned that half of Australia will very likely be in for a cold and wet spring.

According to an official outlook, there is an 80 per cent chance that almost half of Australia will be lashed with above median levels of rainfall from September to November. Large swathes of the country are forecast to be effected, from the tip of Darwin to almost all of NSW.

It comes after parts of Adelaide were thrashed with wet weather on Monday in the final soaking of the winter season.

Despite the West Tce station only observing 5.6mm of rain, parts of the hills including Ashton copped 27mm.

Other hills regions with high totals from 9am Monday included Mt Lofty, 21mm, and Lenswood, 18mm.

Snow fell in parts of the state early last week as temperatures dramatically dropped in a cold weather event.
