SA speed cameras nab the most drivers on the Northern Connector, which only opened last year

Police have released fines data for the 2020 calendar year with a surprising 60 per cent increase in motorists caught by cameras. Here are the top 10 locations.

Northern Connector's Port River expressway bridge takes shape

Mobile speed cameras nabbed more drivers on the Northern Connector than anywhere else in Adelaide last year, new data shows.

Fine revenue generated from mobile speed cameras on the road was twice as much as any other location, the SA Police expiation and caution statistics revealed.

Almost 3800 fines, worth $1.7m, were issued to drivers on the Northern Connector, which only opened in March last year.

Coming in second was Main South Road, at Old Noarlunga, where 2637 people were caught speeding, and fined a combined $829,339.

In third place was Jeffcott Street, North Adelaide, where 1898 fines, worth $572,454, were issued.

RAA spokesman Charles Mountain said the Northern Connector, running north from the Port River Expressway, was a surprising location for the most-active speed camera.

“It is a new road and a very fast and free-flowing road,” Mr Mountain said.

“It is a good reminder for motorists not to let speed creep up on them and go over when they find themselves on a stretch of very high-quality and clear road.

“It is a bit of a trap because it is a very good piece of infrastructure, which is attracting a large number of people, who may be carried away with the efficiency of it.”

Despite many people being housebound because of COVID-19 restrictions, mobile cameras recorded a 60 per cent increase in motorists caught.

In 2020, cameras detected 115,978 speeding offences, worth $45.2m in fines.

That was a large increase on the 72,498 fines, worth $27.1m, issued in 2019.

Mr Mountain suggested people emerging from COVID-19 lockdowns, and periods of working from home, were caught speeding as they returned to driving.

A police spokesman said speed was a contributing factor in 30 per cent of lives lost on the roads in 2020.

“The higher the speed, the harder the impact,” he said.

“It is every road user’s responsibility to drive to the speed limit to reduce the risk of a serious crash.”

Police have around 100 mobile speed cameras on a daily rotation.

New locations are selected based on intelligence.
