An internationally acclaimed photojournalist has attempted to plead guilty to excessive speeding on a motorcycle – even though he was not the driver.
Roderick Charles Eime appeared in Mount Barker Magistrate Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to a camera offence committed in Paracombe on December 14, 2019.
It was alleged Eime travelled 31km/h over the speed limit -– an offence carrying the loss of seven demerit points and a fine of $1532.
The guilty plea was vacated by magistrate Lynette Duncan after it was alluded to that Eime may not be the legal owner of the vehicle.
Eime also stated that he was not the driver at the time of the offence but would not reveal the real driver’s identity.
When questioned whether he wished to proceed with a guilty plea, considering the circumstances, Eime agreed to continue with proceedings.
However, he urged the court to show lenience.
“I’ve accepted that it was probable that I would encourage a fine,” he said.
“But I was hoping to retain one point so that I could continue to assist (my mother).”
Unsatisfied with the response, Magistrate Duncan urged Eime to seek further legal advice.
“If you intend to plead guilty today, on the basis that you’re the owner of the vehicle, not only will there be a significant fine that applies but you may incur seven demerit points in relation to the matter,” Magistrate Duncan said.
“So if you would like to get some further legal advice in relation to your position, I would give you the opportunity.”
The matter has been adjourned to January, 2021.
