SA floods: River Murray peak flow to predicted to reach 165GL a day

New River Murray flooding figures have risen to a predicted 165GL a day by next month – with a “moderate” chance of higher flows that will hit about 4000 homes and shacks.

The state government has announced that the River Murray peak flow is expected to increase to 165GL a day from early December.

SASES Chief Officer Chris Beattie said on Thursday it is estimated that about 400 properties will be “inundated above the floor level” if the 165 GL mark is reached.

Mr Beattie added that they are planning for 165 GL a day but “have their mind open to the fact that it could be higher”.

“At the 200GL mark we are looking at approximately 4250 premises (being flooded),” Mr Beattie said.

It is feared that future flow projections will be affected by the 25-100mm of rain that is forecast for the Murray-Darling Basin in the next week.

Deputy Premier Susan Close said there is a “moderate possibility” of peak flows of 200GL a day and even a possibility of reaching 220GL a day.

“The uncertainties in flow forecasting mean people need to prepare for at least the worst case scenario,” she said.

“Because some of the water is moving faster than previously anticipated, it will probably get to over 150GL per day in late November.”

The Renmark levee banks have been designed for a 210GL flood – the flood level from the 1931 Murray River flood.

Mr Beattie said the SASES are continuing to work closely with local councils for risk assessments.

“The levees are much higher than a 210GL flood,” Mr Beattie said.

“We are looking carefully at the contingency plans that will need to be enacted, particularly for vulnerable communities as that water level rises.

“There will be some planned relocations once we get to thresholds of water against the levee.”

Mr Beattie encouraged communities to stay aware of any changes and to visit the SES website frequently.

“With increased flow and higher water levels, we urge anyone on the water to be aware of their risk, wear life jackets and supervise children at all time,” he said.

A dedicated River Murray hotline – 1800 362 361 – is available from 8.30am to 5pm if there are any questions about the high flows.
