Councils across the state have been given a combined $40 million in fresh cash to get grassroots project off the ground swiftly.

The funding is part of a Federal Government bid – that also includes bringing forward $1.5 billion in cash already allocated to councils across the country – to stimulate the economy due to COVID-19.

Councils can use the cash for road projects including traffic signs, street lights, a bridge or tunnel or sidewalk.

Community projects ranging from CCTV cameras, to bike paths, landscaping, picnic shelters and playgrounds can also be funded by the new cash.

Local Government Association President Sam Telfer said councils have a proven record of partnering with other tiers of government to deliver infrastructure projects.

“A recent LGA survey showed that more than 80 per cent of SA councils are already looking at bringing forward capital works projects to give local economies a boost in response to COVID-19,” he said.

“The survey also identified that more than $340 million worth of council projects could be implemented with support from the state and federal governments.

“This $40 million stimulus funding will help councils bring forward projects that will improve the amenity of their communities, and support economic recovery.”

The funding is in addition to a recent State Government $25 million funding injection aimed at stimulating the economy.

In mid May the Sunday Mail revealed that 37 projects including an overhaul of Adelaide’s Whitmore Square, rejuvenation near the mouth of the River Torrens and beautification of the Victor Harbor foreshore had been funded under that stream.

Councils are expected to announce potential projects for the funding before July 1.
