A $12 million linear park will run down Breakout Creek to the River Torrens outlet after West Torrens Council gave it the final tick of approval.
West Torrens this week approved the final $2 million of funding required to upgrade the 1.7km long park to West Beach.
It will include paths, footbridges and revegetation and lighting.
The project, headed up by the Green Adelaide Board, has $4 million of State Government funding and $2 million contributions from West Torrens and Charles Sturt councils, the Green Adelaide Board and the Federal Government.
Environment Minister David Speirs said the project would improve water quality and wildlife habitat in the area.
“This project will deliver significant environmental benefits in the western suburbs, increase access to the public, improve local flood management and create jobs during construction,” Mr Speirs said.
West Torrens Mayor Michael Coxon said the project would likely take “a couple of years to complete”.
“It’s a good local stimulus project that we hope will help the local economy and of course the environment,” Mr Coxon said.
“It’ll be a great investment in our future.”
Designs are currently being created with construction expected to begin next year.
A 500m stretch of the creek was upgraded in 1999 upstream of Henley Beach Rd and another stage was completed between Henley Beach and Tapleys Hill roads in 2010.
