The family of an Adelaide woman who died in a tragic car crash in the Northern Territory last week is appealing for help to bring the mother of two home and fulfil her wish of her ashes being spread on an SA beach.
On Thursday, Rebecca Anne Bennetts tragically lost her life in a vehicle incident in the Northern Territory.
Her daughter Patricia Bennetts said her mum was on the way to go fishing when the car crashed on an outback road.
“We spoke to mum about an hour before she left … we are still in shock,” she said.
“We were looking forward to seeing her for Christmas and we are still trying to process it.”
The 18-year-old said her mother spent her time between Adelaide and the Northern Territory where she had been since April last year.
“She was well-known in Adelaide and in the Territory … I think she left a mark on every single person she came across,” she said.
“She spent her time between SA and the NT, but she always wanted her ashes spread on an Adelaide beach.”
Michael Bennetts said his wife of 20 years and the mother of two children, Patricia and Ethan, had left the world “far too soon”.
The family launched a GoFundMe, asking for help to bring the body of the mother back to Adelaide ahead of a farewell.
“Between the tyranny of distance, being unemployed for two years, our children still students, the cost of travel and returning Rebecca to Adelaide is beyond our financial capabilities,” he said.
“Please help, even the smallest amount will add up to help us deal with this tragedy.”
Members of the Kilburn Football Club have called for the club’s community to get behind the family.
“Two beautiful kids who we all adore lost the love of their life, unconditional love flowed with their mummy … “Patricia, our gorgeous girl, one of our players in our AWFL, supported by little brother Ethan,” a member posted online.
“Both parents Rebecca and Michael were on the Junior Committee in 2009-2011 and their late grandfather Lenny Bennetts managed the club and many years on the board and grandmother Patricia ‘Pat’ Bennetts both life members of seniors and juniors.
“Let’s support the kids to get their mummy home.”
Last week, NT Police investigated a single vehicle crash in Gregory which led to the death of a 41-year-old woman.
Two occupants were ejected from a car when it crashed about 15km east of the Victoria River Roadhouse on the Victoria Highway.
The 39-year-old was taken to Katherine District Hospital, about 200km away, with non-life threatening injuries.
Superintendent Daniel Shean said the crash brought the road toll to 30 for the year, compared to 49 deaths on Territory at the same time last year.
“The holiday season always sees an increase in motorists on territory roads and Northern Territory Police are urging everyone to take care,” he said.
“Our lives lost on the roads this year is now 30, that’s 30 too many.”
