A loose strap of fabric has plunged a Territory family into mourning as major crash investigators reveal the cause of a woman’s death.
NT Police assistant commissioner Travis Wurst said a 41-year-old woman was not wearing a seatbelt when she was “thrown” from a car in a remote crash, 200km southwest of Katherine.
The 41-year-old and her 39-year-old fellow traveller were driving down the Victoria Highway on Thursday afternoon when they crashed 15km east of the Victoria River Roadhouse.
Mr Wurst said both of the women were not wearing their seatbelts, and they were “thrown from the vehicle and unfortunately, one person was killed”.
“This brings the Territory’s road toll to 30 people for this year,” Mr Wurst said.
“(It’s) 30 people too many, 30 people that will not be home for Christmas this year.”
Mr Wurst said the fatal five — speed, drugs and alcohol, distraction, fatigue and seatbelts — were contributing factors in almost all of the Territory’s road deaths.
