They are the decision makers tasked with shaping South Australia’s future and today The Advertiser reveals the political power rankings of 2024.

The Black by-election win cemented the Labor Party’s power in South Australia along with the Premier’s top spot as he continues to ride an enduring wave of popularity.

In fact, a swath of Labor red takes out the top six spots in the state’s political power rankings as the Liberal Party’s strength wanes after constant scandals and brutal infighting.

Peter Malinauskas makes full use of his charm to snag international events and has managed to emerge as a national figure in promoting AUKUS and leading the way on social media law.

Labor’s Penny Wong continues to wield serious power as Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister but it could be a very different scenario after next year’s election with the far-more competitive national Liberal Party holding steady.

Alex Antic is a surprise inclusion so high in the rankings but this little-known federal senate backbencher has worked hard in the shadows to see all state Liberal Party executive spots filled with his own prized conservative champions.

It’s a move that saw him knock one of the nation’s most senior Liberal federal leaders Anne Ruston off the top senate election spot, a blow that sees her slip down the rankings.

In the mix is Antic’s pal Tony Pasin, along with the state Liberal Leader Vincent Tarzia who had a rude awakening after the aforementioned Black by-election.

This list is the second instalment in the countdown to The Advertiser’s annual power rankings with SA’s 100 most influential people of 2024 to be revealed in December.

In the lead up, The Advertiser will rank the state’s most powerful people across different industries including sport, public service, entertainment and business.
