Officer Michael Hutchinson wins National Police Bravery Award for trying to save Jason Doig during fatal Bordertown shooting

Sergeant Michael Hutchinson risked his life trying to save a wounded colleague during a horrific shooting. Now, he’s been awarded a top accolade.

The hero cop who risked his life trying to save police officer Jason Doig during a horrific shooting has been awarded the 2024 National Police Bravery Award.

Earlier this week, Sergeant Michael Hutchinson was named as the joint recipient of the award for his courage to approach, disarm and handcuff, Jaydn Stimson, who had allegedly gunned down Brevet Sergeant Doig near Bordertown last November.

Despite his own injuries, Sgt Hutchinson also provided CPR to Sgt Doig with the help of fellow officer Constable Rebekah Cass before medical help arrived.

Sgt Doig sadly died at the scene with Sgt Hutchinson taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Following the tragedy, SA Deputy Police Commissioner Linda Williams said Sgt Hutchinson and Constable Cass had shown great courage in the face of danger.

“Both Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass placed themselves at great personal risk to render first aid to Brevet Sergeant Doig and handcuff the accused under what was an incredibly confronting and distressing incident,” she said.

“Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass performed their duties on the night with courage and bravery.”

The award was presented to the beloved Bordertown cop, known as ‘Sarge’ to locals, at a formal ceremony in Melbourne on Tuesday where he was praised for his calm and professional manner during the shooting.

He shares the award with NSW officer Inspector Amy Scott, who confronted and shot dead Bondi Junction killer Joel Cauchi.

Remembered as a “legendary” country cop, Sgt Doig was the first South Australian police officer to be killed by a firearm while on duty since 1985.

In June, Mr Stimson appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, by video link from James Nash House where he pleaded not guilty to the murder of Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig. Mr Stimson also pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Sergeant Michael Hutchinson.

In September, a court heard that according to psychiatrists he will likely be “mentally unfit to stand trial”.
