Police have revealed the findings of a preliminary investigation into the fatal shooting in the state’s South-East that claimed the life of Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig – revealing a young officer and her injured colleague managed to handcuff the alleged shooter after being fired upon.
A high-level Police Commissioner Inquiry, involving the Internal Investigation Section, and a Coronial investigation conducted by Major Crime detectives, is piecing together the tragic events at Senior, 273km southeast of Adelaide.
Acting Commissioner Linda Williams said the inquiry had reached a preliminary position outlining what police believe occurred on the fatal evening of Thursday, November 16, but investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Ms Williams said Constable Rebekah Cass, Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson attended the rural property at Senior to conduct inquiries in relation to a domestic-related incident.
According to the inquiry, Jaydn Stimson, 26, allegedly opened fire first on Sgt Doig and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson shortly after they attended the property.
Police said the officers then returned fire, “incapacitating the occupant (Stimson) before arresting him”.
Sgt Doig tragically died at the scene, while Sgt Hutchinson was also hit, later taken to hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.
The inquiry found the two surviving officers handcuffed the alleged shooter despite one being injured.
Sgt Doig tragically died at the scene, while Sgt Hutchinson was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.
Ms Williams commended the injured Sergeant and Const Cass, who were able to handcuff the alleged shooter in the heat of the tragedy.
“Both Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass placed themselves at great personal risk to render first aid to Brevet Sergeant Doig and handcuff the accused under what was an incredibly confronting and distressing incident,” Acting Comm Williams said.
“It is now evident to me that Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass performed their duties on the night with courage and bravery.”
In a tribute shared in The Advertiser, Sgt Doig’s family – including his mother Faye, stepfather Rob and brothers Brett and Greg – remembered him as a dedicated and courageous career policeman.
“Tragically taken from us serving and protecting his community,” they said.
“Jason was a loving and dedicated man who was committed to his family, friends, colleagues and the community he served.”
Mr Stimson suffered a life-threatening injury during the incident, with Constable Cass and Sergeant Hutchinson rendering first aid until more emergency crews arrived.
The alleged shooter appeared in court from his hospital bed in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday January 20, charged with murder and attempted murder.
Sgt Doig was the first officer to lose his life at the hands of a firearm in SA since 1985.
