“Billy I’m scared where are you? I love you”. That was the last text Sheryl Beacham sent her son when he never arrived to her house on November 23.
It was Ms Beacham’s late father’s 80th birthday – Billy’s grandfather – and each year the pair go to the beach to write “Happy Birthday Pops” in the sand.
But this year Billy Martin never made it.
“He was just a good person,” she said.
The 26-year-old was driving from his Andrews Farm home to his mum’s Mitchell Park unit when his car hit a tree on Anzac Highway at Glandore.
He was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he later died.
“I miss him so much, it’s not fair, I didn’t get to say goodbye,” Ms Beacham said.
Ms Beacham said her son was kind, funny and always protected her.
“He lived life to the fullest in the short time he was here,” she said. “He had fun, he was just here to experience life to the fullest.”
She described him as a “good kid with a good heart” who loved cars and gardening.
“He was a mini-me,” she said.
Ms Beacham, 53, said Billy had been with her the day before the crash and when he left to return home he hugged and kissed her and told her he “loved her to the moon and back”.
A nurse stopped to help Billy, according to Ms Beacham, who she said she doesn’t know but wanted to thank.
“She was really good,” she said.
Billy’s father Les Martin paid tribute to his son on social media calling him a “rebel”.
“I’m here to let our friends and family know that today we lost my son Billy, as a result of a car accident,” he posted.
“He was 26 years young, such a rebel and now able to rest in peace. So long my boy, you will be sadly missed.”
Billy was born on September 28, 1997 and died on November 23. He was 26 years old.
He was the 103rd life lost on South Australian roads compared to 61 at the same time last year.
