The smell of victory became a familiar one for a Mount Pleasant butcher at a national meat awards after taking home 11 gongs including bragging rights for best bacon in the country.
Family-owned Mount Pleasant Butcher was awarded the one of the most prestigious titles in the industry, the best shortcut bacon in the nation at the Australia Charcuterie Excellence Awards.
Dubbed the ‘Logies’ of the meat world, the award ceremony held in Melbourne, recognises products of quality and excellence in the small goods industry.
Contenders have the chance to grab a gold, silver or bronze medal, with Mount Pleasant Butcher picking up nine gold medals and two national awards.
Butcher Ben Schubert said it was “fantastic” recognition.
“There was great respect throughout the room, to beat out some big companies like Primo and Bertocchi and for them to acknowledge and recognise us, it’s pretty good,” he said.
“We take great pride in everything we do, from the meat that we sell to the quality of our small goods.”
The Mount Pleasant Butcher wasn’t the only South Australian meats business to feature prominently in the awards with Waikerie’s Rollbusch Quality Meats winning the nation’s best ham category.
“Two years ago they beat us for bacon and we won the ham, so this year roles were reversed, which turned out great,” Mr Schubert said.
“The industry is tough, but we are always speaking to other companies about how they produce stuff and they’ll do the same with us.”
He said the results were a great reward for the butcher’s 28 staff.
“It all goes back to them. It’s a ripping shop so come up and try us,” he said.
