South Australia’s oldest continuous butcher shop, Jamestown Meat Service, will close its doors on December 23.
The 144-year-old shop made the sad announcement on Facebook earlier in the week, stating the decision was made with “a heavy heart”.
“We had held off making this announcement in the hope of passing the reins on, however this has sadly not been the case,” the post read.
“While we are sad to see the longest continuous butcher shop come to an end, we close with many fond memories.”
The shop’s much-loved owner, Denis Ganley, ran the shop for 40 years and wrote that his highlight was giving children a piece of fritz and seeing them grow up.
Mr Ganley worked towards making the butcher shop an award-winning business.
A Facebook post in August showed several awards won by the store at the 2022 Regional Smallgoods and Sausage King Competition.
The renowned butcher told ABC Radio Adelaide on Thursday morning that he had enjoyed serving the community for the past four decades.
“It’s been a blast, it really has, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said.
