Independent MP Frank Pangallo proposes new bill that could see drivers face extra jail time for boasting online

Police say a 31-year-old man was caught red handed doing burnouts before crashing into a Stobie pole in the northern suburbs on Thursday.

A man has been arrested after attempting to run from a crash at Paralowie overnight.

Police said a patrol was travelling on Kings Rd, Bolivar just before 3.15am on Thursday when officers saw a gold Holden doing burnouts at the intersection of Kings and Bolivar roads.

Witnesses told police the same car had been overtaking traffic on the wrong side of Kings Rd before crashing into a roundabout at the intersection of Whites Rd.

Police said the patrol found the car crashed into a Stobie pole near the roundabout but the driver had left the scene.

Officers called for police dog Axe to search of the driver, who tracked a scent on Thorngate Drive, through a riverbank.

The man was located and arrested by patrols shortly after.

Police said a search of the car found keys to other vehicles and registration plates that did not match the vehicle.

Checks also revealed the alleged driver did not hold a current drivers licence.

That man, a 31-year-old from Paralowie, sustained minor injuries from the crash.

He was charged with misuse motor vehicle, driving without due care, driving unlicensed, unlawful possession and breaching his curfew bail.

He was refused police bail and will attend the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Thursday’s crash follows an announcement earlier this week that proposed new laws introduced to parliament by Independent MP Frank Pangallo, could see criminals who brag about their driving crimes online face tougher penalties including an additional two years of jail time.

The proposal comes after terrifying footage surfaced on social media of a hoon driver travelling at nearly three times the speed limit on a major road in Adelaide’s south.

A driver was captured by a passenger speeding on Main South Rd, Morphett Vale, while gripping the steering wheel with one hand.

Speeds of up to 171 km/ph were shown in the recording, as the driver whisked past a ‘60 km’ traffic sign, and a pedestrian crossing.

According to 9News, the driver received a defect vehicle notice in October.

Police Minister Dan Cregan said the driver’s actions put their lives and other road users at risk. “It’s absolutely outrageous behaviour,” Mr Cregan said.

“The government is giving close consideration to the proposals that Frank Pangallo has raised, we’re concerned about it in South Australia.”

Australian Road Safety Foundation’s managing director, Russell White said this sort of behaviour can’t be looked at as a dare or a joke.

“It’s the same as if they were to have a weapon,” Mr White said.
