Hot cross bun taste test: Which flavour Easter bun is the best

The debate about hot cross buns has gone beyond toasted versus fresh, with new flavours like Vegemite causing controversy. Which bun reigns supreme?

The humble hot cross bun can be found at the centre of many debates during Easter.

Discussion rages over when is the appropriate time for them to appear on shop shelves, and what is even considered a legitimate hot cross bun flavour.

Toasted or fresh? Well that’s enough to cause a scuffle in anyone’s kitchen.

In the Easter spirit, The Advertiser put one South Australian family to a taste test to settle at least one of the infamous disagreements – which flavour hot cross bun is the best?

The Bennett family, made up of mum Fen, dad Paul and children Liam, 7, Alannah, 4 and Isabelle, 2, tested five Coles supermarket hot cross buns to see which flavour came out supreme.

Lined up were the fruit, apple and cinnamon, burger, vegemite and cheese and chocolate buns.

The Burnside family eat their buns fresh with no butter – “straight from the packet”.

“Chocolate was by far the favourite,” Ms Bennett said.

“(Isabelle) actually ate two.”

Surprisingly, the new burger hot cross bun was also crowd favourite with Ms Bennett and Liam “really liking” the unusual combination.

“Liam ate one and a half of those,” Ms Bennett said giving the bun a solid eight out of 10.

Unfortunately the Aussie classic vegemite and cheese didn’t cut it for the Bennett family giving the bun a four out of a possible 10 points.

According to the Bennett’s what makes a good hot cross bun is … chocolate.
