SA bakery Banana Boogie Bakery at Belair wins best hot cross buns in the country

After seven years of trying, an Adelaide bakery has taken out the title of best hot cross buns at a national competition.

An Adelaide bakery has walked away with the title of best buns at a national competition at the weekend.

Banana Boogie Bakery at Belair won first and second place in the hot cross buns category at The Baking Association of Australia’s annual Victorian Baking Show.

Owner Jason Spencer said it was “surreal” to win after almost a decade of being in the competition.

“We’ve been trying to get the top spot for seven years,” Mr Spencer said. “We’ve been second and third plenty of times and this year we did it.”

The bakery took home the first and second spot for their perfect buns.

“We know we’ve got good buns and we had such a good bake day on the competition day,” Mr Spencer said.

“We had a good feeling this year that we’d be in one of the top spots.”

Mr Spencer said the secret to their award-winning hot cross buns was adding a tonne of high-quality sultanas and currants.

“There’s lots of fruit in our buns, people always manage to notice when they bite into,” he said.

Mr Spencer said last year the bakery sold 50,000 hot cross buns and in the past two days they had sold 1500.

The bakery took home the top spot after its hot cross buns placed third in the 2022 national competition.

Numerous winners were crowned over multiple categories dedicated to all kinds of breads, pastries and sweets.

As well as the Belair bakery. Orange Spot Bakery at Glenelg was another SA bakery that won an award.

Orange Spot Bakery took third prize for both the traditional pastie and iced doughnut categories.
