The state’s peak road safety authority says it has grave concerns about the disparity of the road toll, compared with SA’s record low in 2018, and has urged motorists to be extra vigilant to avoid a horror year.

The state’s road toll is now 30, compared with 18 at the same time last year.

RAA road safety senior manager Charles Mountain said motorcycle and pedestrian deaths were behind this year’s road toll spike.

“It is of grave concern to see so early in the year a difference to the road tally from last year,” Mr Mountain said.

“We are pleading for people to take care in the task of driving, otherwise we are going to end up with a horror year on the roads.

“Driving is a complex task that requires total concentration and motorists really need to focus to ensure they are doing the right thing and making the right choices.”

CRASH 1: A male driver and a female driver remain in a serious but stable condition in Royal Adelaide Hospital after crashing on the Sturt Hwy at Yamba, near the SA-Victoria border, about 10.20am on Tuesday.

CRASH 4: A Rostrevor man, 40, died after he was hit by an SUV that sideswiped a stationary bus and mounted a kerb on North Tce at Kent Town about 8.30am on Wednesday.

CRASH 5: An Eyre Peninsula woman, 60, died when the 4WD in which she was a passenger rolled on Eyre Hwy at Carawa, about 60km southeast of Ceduna, just before 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Emergency Services Minister Corey Wingard said road safety was an issue the State Government hoped to tackle.

“Any injury, let alone death, on our roads is an absolute tragedy,” he said.

“So please take care, follow the road laws and take it easy.”
