Foreign Minister Penny Wong has penned a moving tribute following the death of her mum over the weekend.
In an Instagram post on Monday, Senator Wong said her beloved mother Jane Chapman had died peacefully on Sunday.
“We will miss her terribly,” she said.
Senator Wong remembered her mum as a woman of “exceptional insight, of mischievous wit and endless curiosity”.
“Most of all she was a woman of deep compassion and principle,” she said.
“She gave expression to her compassion through her courage and determination for justice, qualities that have steeled me through all my life’s challenges.
“Through her work, her choices, her courage and her deeds, she inspired and empowered me and so many others.”
She thanked the staff at Mary Potter Hospice for their gentleness and compassion.
“We are comforted by the many family, friends and colleagues who have offered so much love and support,” she said.
Ms Chapman’s death comes less than a year after Senator Wong confirmed the death of her father, Francis Wong Yit Shing.
Following his death in May 2023, Senator Wong remembered Mr Wong as a much-loved father, grandfather and a well-respected architect.
