Long-serving Labor MP Tony Zappia is headed for a comfortable victory in his northeastern Adelaide seat of Makin.
Mr Zappia was leading Liberal rival Hemant Dave by 61 per cent to 39 per cent on a two-party preferred basis, with more than 70 per cent of the vote counted.
The former Salisbury mayor had won 49.3 per cent of the primary vote, ahead of Mr Dave’s 32.6 per cent.
This represented a swing of 6.6 per cent to Mr Zappia on primary vote and 0.2 per cent on the two-party preferred.
Mr Zappia said a significant amount of voters had chosen to cast their ballot before polling day in Makin.
“Last election, there was only one (pre-polling booth in Makin), this time there were three,” he said.
“The polling booths haven’t been put under pressure like they usually have been, it’s been much quieter.”
Mr Zappia was joined by wife Nicky, daughter Concetta and four-month-old granddaughter Victoria at Pooraka Primary School, where the couple cast their votes.
Mr Zappia said he was optimistic about being able to continue to work for the northern suburbs, where he has spent his entire life.
The former bank officer and fitness centre manager said Labor had a clear agenda on climate change, health reform and job security, which all affected his constituents.
