Four victims involved in road crashes one day after horror southeast fatal

Police have been left asking when the state’s road carnage will end, as four victims were injured in serious road collisions the day after a man was left dead following another fatal crash.

Serious crash in Monbulla

Police have been left dumbfounded by South Australian drivers, with a cyclist fighting for his life and two teens being struck by a truck, a day after a man was killed in a fatal crash in the state’s South-East.

Officer in Charge Eastern District Superintendent Narelle Kameniar said police were “beyond frustrated” with motorists over the spate of “completely preventable” collisions.

Three students from Marryatville High School were involved in the horror truck crash that occurred in front of the high school that left two students hospitalised – one in a critical condition.
A 60-year-old man was arrested by Major Crash officers on Wednesday afternoon and charged with two counts of causing injury by dangerous driving.

“It looks like the students were crossing at the pedestrian crossing and the truck may have gone through a red light,” she said at a press conference Wednesday morning,” Superintendent Kameniar said.

Supt Kameniar said three of the four traffic lights at the crossing were “clearly visible” despite debris and fallen branches from Monday’s wild weather.

“There is no reason why that light should not have been seen by that driver,” she said.

Both students were taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital – the girl in a serious condition and the boy in a critical condition.

Supt Kamenjar said the 36 road deaths equated to roughly one fatal collision occurring every two days.

On Tuesday a 65-year-old Victorian man died while a female driver was rushed to Mount Gambier hospital following a horror head-on crash near Penola.

Police were called to Clay Wells Road, also known as the Robe to Penola Road, just after 11.30am following reports of a two car crash between a Volkswagen Ute and a Honda Sedan at Monbulla.

The single occupant of the Honda, a 65-year-old Victorian man, died at the scene.

The driver of the ute, a 62-year-old woman from Monbulla, sustained minor injuries.

The man’s death is the 36th life lost on SA roads compared to 16 at the same time last year.
