Adelaide among the ‘20 Most Beautiful Cities in the World’ – and it has made Vic premier a touch jealous

Adelaide’s new status as one the world’s most beautiful cities has triggered Victorian premier Jacinta Allan – but Peter Malinauskas had the perfect response.

Adelaide named one of the world's most beautiful cities

A social media stoush has erupted between Peter Malinauskas and his Victorian counterpart after Adelaide was named one of the world’s most beautiful cities by an influential design magazine.

Victorian premier Jacinta Allan poked fun at the honour after Mr Malinauskas highlighted the city’s new title, one of 20 in a list by US publication Architectural Digest.

“That’s cool and all, but if you need a place to eat after 5pm, hit us up!” Ms Allan wrote.

The SA Premier responded: “According to @thetimes, our food scene over here goes alright”, sharing a 2023 article from respected US newspaper, the New York Times, in which the author declared Adelaide’s cuisine surpassed Melbourne’s.

Ms Allan has yet to respond to Mr Malinauskas’s latest riposte.

Adelaide was the only Australian city to make the prestigious list, joining top global destinations including New York, Olympic host city Paris, Singapore, Florence, Barcelona and Amsterdam.

The magazine said Adelaide’s natural beauty stood out, highlighting its “beaches, vineyards and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife”.

“Find surf, sand dunes, and Art Deco architecture in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia,” the publication wrote.

“In fact, you can experience all three, as well as Victorian architecture at Semaphore Beach, just 9 miles from the city centre.

“Beyond the beach, Adelaide has rolling hills lush with high-quality grapes, making it the country’s wine capital. When not sipping an Australian cab, nature lovers can spot koalas and kangaroos on a hike in the Adelaide Hills.”

The publication said it considered “architecture, cultural treasures, historical relevance, as well as natural appeal” when compiling its list.

“The best cities offer something that can’t be found anywhere else. Destinations from all over the globe made the list, some for possessing all of the above in a single place,” it said.

Other cities to make the top 20 include Istanbul, Turkey, Tallinn, Estonia, Portsmouth, Dominica, Rio Di Janiero, Brazil, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Antigua, Guatemala, Chefchaouen, Morocco, Chiang Mai, Thailand, Luxor, Egypt, Kyoto, Japan, Cape Town, South Africa, Jaipur, India and Djenné, Mali.

It comes after prominent New York-based daily newspaper the Wall Street Journal labelled Adelaide ‘Australia’s coolest city’ in October last year.
