An elderly man who was left in intensive care after allegedly being attacked in an alleged assault at Modbury Hospital last month says more needs to be done to protect visitors.

91-year-old Victor Watson was visiting his wife with his son-in-law when the pair were allegedly set upon by a man outside the hospital.

“I was off balance and I fell and that’s when I hit my head and then I woke up for a few seconds and then I was blacked out,” he told 9 News.

“I was stupid to go out there, I know, I’ve been told that many times but that’s the sort of person I am.”

During the alleged attack, Mr Watson was punched in the head, spending three weeks in intensive care recovering from his injuries.

His alleged attacker, 36-year-old Kym Bicknell, who was being treated at the hospital for a skin infection, was arrested on the night of the incident.

The Ridgehaven man was charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of assault causing harm, theft and assault – he is due back in court on Tuesday July 2.

Mr Watson and his son-in-law were among four alleged victims, including a nurse and security guard, that police say were attacked by Mr Bicknell.

Safety outside the hospital remains an ongoing concern with a nurse allegedly assaulted while walking back to her car, parked offsite due to lack of spaces in a separate incident in May.

Police do not allege Bicknell had any involvement in that incident.

Following pressure from the nursing union, the hospital has committed to extra security measures, including security escorts after dark and guaranteed parking for all staff working after hours and weekends.

“Anyone who is working after hours or on weekends will be guaranteed a car park on site,” chief executive of the state’s nursing union, Elizabeth Dadars said.

Mr Watson welcomed the news but said there “definitely” needs to be security closer to the doors to prevent another alleged attack like his happening again.
