MJ Casalbore, was settling in with his two children at his Magill home after work on Wednesday night when his niece called him to tell him a car had ploughed through the front of his Norwood barber shop.
“I got a call from my niece and I thought it was a joke,” owner of Johnny Slicks, Mr Casalbore, said.
“I ran upstairs, put my shoes on and went down there.”
He arrived to see his shop, which he had decked out with custom chairs, mirrors and plumbing, was destroyed.
“I had to turn the water off because the place was flooded.”
Emergency services were called to The Parade after a lime green Ford Mustang that was travelling west lost control and crashed into a parked car and then into barber shop Johnny Slicks about 9.45pm.
And the car slammed into the exact area Mr Casalbore was working at just four hours earlier.
“The chairs they took out were the chairs me and my colleague work at.”
Mr Casalbore said he was sent into shock.
“I was thinking financially I’m screwed.”
He now faces a repair bill of more than $50k to return his shop to working order as “the whole thing has to be redone” including plumbing and his destroyed frontage.
Mr Casalbore said he has been forced to close for two to three months while he works on fixing the damage.
“Any income I would have had I’ll be missing out on,” he said.
“I’ve got two other staff I’ve got to look after.”
He spent Thursday notifying clients that he has had to close and he has been dealing with his insurance company.
“I’m gutted.”
Despite the devastation to his business, Mr Casalbore said he will “try to stay positive” and will “focus on sourcing the materials again”.
The driver, a 42-year-old Rostrevor man, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The Mustang was towed from the scene.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing and the driver is expected to be issued with a fine.
It comes as four teenage girls were arrested following a carjacking and police chase in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Meantime, a car has flipped on its roof on Fletcher Rd at Largs Bay after colliding with a parked vehicle just before 7.30am.
A section of the road was closed while the scene was cleared but it has since been reopened.
