Thousands of dollars have been raised to support a grieving South Burnett family after the shock death of “bright and kind” Kyan Martin at the weekend.
Kyan, 18, was killed when he was run over by a ute while lying on the road early in the morning of July 19, at Hivesville.
Initial investigations indicated a Toyota HiLux was travelling on Wondai Proston Road about 6am when it hit him.
Emergency services reported he sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.
Mr Martin’s uncle, Riley Parkyn, organised a GoFundMe to support the family “during this painful time” and to allow them to give him “the memorial he deserves”.
“Our beloved Kyan was tragically taken from us far too soon,” the fundraiser read.
“He was a bright, kind soul whose presence brought light to everyone who knew him.”
In less than 24 hours, the fundraiser had raised more than $7000, with just $4000 to go until it reaches its goal.
His death was one of 16 in seven days on Queensland roads, sparking a peak motoring body warning Queensland was again on track to post a record year of road deaths.
A total of 158 people had died due to road crashes as of July 20, 2025 – six of those on Saturday and Sunday.
Tom Taekeun Lee paid tribute to Kyan on Facebook.
“Thank you for always welcoming me whenever I came to the distribution,” he wrote.
“You’ll never be forgotten.”
Linda McQualter said he was a “beautiful guy, with a kind heart”.
Forensic Crash Unit investigations into the circumstances of the incident are underway.
