A man who allegedly assaulted his partner at a Nightcliff residence has been hit with three charges.

NT Police said they responded to the alleged assault on Wednesday and arrested the 35-year-old man.

Detectives from the Domestic and Family Violence Section charged the man with aggravated assault, deprivation of liberty, and choking, strangling, or suffocating in a domestic relationship.

Police said he was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Friday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Justin Bentley said the incident included “cowardly acts of violence and not acceptable behaviour under any circumstances”.

How police swooped on man wanted for alleged hit and run

A man who allegedly attempted to run over two people in Jingili has been arrested and faces 13 charges.

NT Police alleged the 28-year-old man drove a green Pajero at a man and woman in front of a McMillans Rd service station at 7.25pm, September 29.

It is understood the 30-year-old woman was struck, and later treated by paramedics at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle also collided with an ice machine before leaving the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Day said investigations into the driver’s whereabouts, who was known to the woman and 31-year-old man, revealed he had fled the Territory.

He said detectives were actively monitoring the 28-year-old’s movements and made the arrest at Darwin Airport when he arrived on an interstate flight.

The man was charged with three counts of recklessly endangering serious harm, three counts of criminal damage, two counts of acts intent to cause serious harm, two counts of driving in a dangerous manner, two counts of driving unlicensed.

He was also charged for being armed with an offensive weapon.

Police said the man had since been remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on March 1.

Cars lost to fiery blaze in Katherine

A Katherine residence was evacuated after the occupants’ car went up in flames.

NT Police responded to reports of fire and smoke on Grevillea Rd and Callistemon Dr in Katherine East at 1.30am on Thursday.

Officers said fire crews extinguished two vehicles while one home was evacuated, and no one was injured.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said crime scenes had been established for both fires while police investigate the incidents.

“Police are urging anyone who may have CCTV footage of suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of the incidents at the time or has any knowledge of the circumstances to contact police on 131 444 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” he said.

“Please quote reference number 10230228.”

Police search for alleged car thief

Police are searching for a person who allegedly stole a car before leading them on a pursuit overnight.

About 2.30am on Monday, police received reports a blue Honda sedan had been stolen from Sabine Rd.

CCTV operators tracked the car to the Darwin CBD where police attempted to stop the vehicle.

A brief pursuit of the car was called off due to concerns for public safety, before Strike Force Trident and general duties officers located the car at a public housing complex in Nightcliff.

No arrests have been made, with police still working to identify the driver.

Police urge anyone with information to contact them on 131444.

Call for witnesses after alleged New Year’s assault

Police are calling for witnesses after a woman was allegedly assaulted in the Darwin CBD on New Year’s Day.

Police said the woman was assaulted about 4.20am on January 1 by an unknown person near Searcy St, which runs from Cavenagh St to Smith St.

A woman was believed to have witnessed the incident.

Police said the woman, who is described as caucasian, in her 20s with shoulder-length black hair and wearing a pink skirt, black top and floral boots, may be able to assist with their inquiries.

“This woman was not involved in the assault, however, we do believe she may have vital information that will assist with inquires,” Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Akers said.

He urged anyone with information to contact police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000, quoting reference number 10219908.
