A cat rescue group has teamed up with a pet store franchise to encourage more Aussies to open their homes and adopt a furever friend.

The 11th consecutive National Pet Adoption Month is on, with many rescues and pet shops across Australia campaigning to give homeless pets their best chance at finding a loving family.

According to Petstock’s Pet Parent Report 2024, 95 per cent of Aussies rave about the positive impact pets bring to their lives, such as the mental health benefits the friendly felines bring.

It’s a sentiment that CatRescue 901’s Kirstie Blain shares, stating pets are an “integral part of a family”.

“I think having a pet teaches kids, especially if they’ve got them at a young age, how to respect and look after something other than themselves,” Ms Blain said.

“And I think it’s really helpful for someone’s mental health.”

Petstock Dural has teamed up with CatRescue 901 for this year’s NPAM, with plans to hold an adoption weekend on March 22 and 23.

There are more than 10,000 pets of all shapes and sizes waiting to be adopted across the country.

And while that number may seem daunting, the CatRescue 901 team has put together a few cats that are just pinching to get adopted.

This five-year-old feline is a sweet and affectionate lady who will zoom around with a ping pong ball like there’s no tomorrow!

Helena will become your lap cat in no time, especially if you bring a brush for some

pampering.

Experienced cat owners would be preferable because Helena is FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) positive and also has had all of her teeth removed.

FIV is the cat version of HIV.

A playful four-year-old kitty cat, Choccy likes to be involved in everything you do, so a house with older children who will be gentle and respect her boundaries, but will also spend plenty of time playing with her would be ideal. She’s also a foodie and a certified cupboard inspector.

Legends say ginger cats come in two versions: psychos who have warrants in three states and sweet baby kitty who could do not wrong.

Thankfully, Suimei is the latter.

The seven-year-old sweetie a gentle affectionate girl who loves a pat and isn’t afraid to ask! She doesn’t like being picked up but she loves to follow people around and is like a second shadow. She’s very vocal and will tell you when she doesn’t like something.

She’s also training to be a lifeguard with how often she wants to hang out in the bathroom with you and make sure your life isn’t in danger.

Despite being rescued from the streets, these boys didn’t constantly go down green pipes or eat mushrooms like their namesakes.

They are brothers bonded so tightly and are looking for a home where you can be patient and willing to nurture them and gain trust with treats over time.

They are really good with quiet younger children who can be very gentle with them.

Ready to have your heart melted by two handsome, yet extremely timid felines?

These boys are better suited to experienced cat owners or to a family with patience, understanding and a gentle touch.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of other cats of all ages looking for a home. But if you can’t adopt, Ms Blain is encouraging Aussies to try out being foster parents.

“We’ve had a lot of people who for example are travelling through here and are visa holders, but they miss their cats at home, become fosters for us,” she said.

“Fostering a cat just gives us room to help and get another cat off the streets. Fostering is our biggest call out.

“We can’t help more cats unless we’ve got the space for them.”
