A Mullumbimby mother preparing to get her child into her car clung to the bonnet of her car as a woman tried to steal it, police allege.
On Friday morning, the mother was allegedly confronted by Nova Tellegen-Dreyer, 26, in the driveway of her Left Bank Rd home, according to police.
The mother allegedly ran around the driveway and stood in front of the car to stop the alleged thief but was pushed onto the bonnet, hanging on as the car sped off, the mother allegedly told police.
Police allege the mother rolled off the car while it was in motion, allowing Tellegen-Dreyer to escape.
Around 9.10am that same day, Tweed-Byron Police attempted to stop the dark grey Ford SUV on Mullumbimby Rd.
Police checks confirmed the vehicle belonged to the mother and a pursuit was initiated when the car failed to stop, according to the documents.
The pursuit was terminated near the intersection of Myocum and Possum Shoot Roads, Myocum, due to safety concerns.
Later that night, around 9.45pm, Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop the same vehicle on Bangalow Rd, Clunes.
A second pursuit began but was quickly called off on Main St due to public safety risks.
Police will allege Tellegen-Dreyer had crashed into a fence before hitting a police car on Bangalow Rd, Howards Grass, north of Lismore. She then fled on foot, police allege.
Police arrested the woman nearby. A roadside breath test returned a negative result.
She was escorted to Lismore police station and charged with taking and driving a car without consent, two counts of police pursuit – not stop – driving dangerously, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, and stealing property inside a dwelling.
Bail was initially refused and she appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
Tellegen-Dreyer was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Mullumbimby Local Court on July 9.
