Police investigating after body found in Alice Springs

Two days after a man’s body was discovered east of Alice Springs near Undooyla Rd, police have revealed the suspected cause of death. Read the details.

Update: January 13, 12pm: NT Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man’s body on a track near Undoolya Road, east of Alice Springs on Saturday afternoon.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter Malley on Monday said police were treating the death as “suspicious”, yet doubted it was a homicide.

Commissioner Malley said police believe the death was “drug related”, but those suspicions would be confirmed in an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday.

“Witnesses reported seeing the man naked, behaving erratically,” Commissioner Malley said.

Initial: January 12, 10.30am: NT Police confirmed they are investigating after a body was found east of Alice Springs on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement released late on Saturday evening, police said they responded to reports of a man’s body found on a track near Undooyla Rd about 4.05pm.

The man is yet to be identified and the cause of death is yet unknown.

Southern Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Andrew Dunne spoke to this masthead on Sunday morning and said the death was being handled by the crime squad.

The crime scene remains open, he said.
