NTFL 2022-23: Watch Palmerston Magpies vs Tiwi Bombers Round 17 livestream

A pair of Palmerston debutants tasted victory in a difficult match against a determined Tiwi Bombers outfit. WATCH THE REPLAY.

WITH neither able to qualify for finals, and only pride to play for, both Palmerston and Tiwi Bombers turned it on at Cazalys Oval and it was the home team that ran away with the game in the second half winning the contest 12.12 (84) to 6.4 (40).

But it took until the closing moments of the first half before the Magpies could shake off the determined islanders when a goal to Palmy forward Michael Langton gave his team a slender lead at the long break.

Before that however running Bombers Harley Bennell and Brayden Rioli together with tough defender Sam Darley ruled the paddock and threatened to cause a major upset.

Meanwhile, Magpie skipper Eric Guthrie was picking up mountains of possession while Josiah Farrer, ruckman David Miles and exciting utility Denzel Marika were making their presence felt.

Importantly, it was the Palmerston defence that closed ranks in the second half and Enrique Andrews, Taylem Stubbs-Talbot and Ashton Hams in particular repelled most of the Bomber forward forays

The visitors managed only a single goal in the second half while the home side booted seven following well crafted entries and a dominance of high-flyers Adam Parry and Langton – three goals each.

An interesting aspect was the debut games of the sons of Palmerston premiership players Thomas Simon and Edward Darcy – both Randall Simon (Bombers) and Darcy (Palmy) booted a goal each for their respective teams.

A relieved man after the game was resigned (additional two years) Palmerston coach Josh Heath and he was especially pleased with his growing list of promising youngsters.

“I was extremely proud of the boys today because they stuck to our process – we’ve been trying to get it right all season and while there have been challenges, it’s about consistency and that was a feature today,” said Heath.

“It’s a new defence and we are teaching the boys structure and where to run and clearly, they are starting to find their groove – it was an important win especially playing at home and with two debutants it’s nice for them to taste victory.

Heath added that first-gamers Marika and Darcy are local boys and both have a bit of size and flash about them which he likes.

The Tiwi Bombers are heading to Palmerston determined to bring home their second win of the 2022-23 NTFL season.

The Magpies have fielded younger sides in recent weeks with one eye on building for seasons to come now that finals are no longer on the table.

And while they haven’t enjoyed the results they did early in the season, they still have exciting players across their list including Ashton Hams and Eric Guthrie.

Tiwi still sit bottom of the table but have plenty of firepower and players who are motivated to end their season with at least one more impressive outing.
