A 16-year-old Palmerston youth faces charges, including assault a worker and assault police, after an incident allegedly involving a baseball bat at Moulden supermarket on Saturday.

Police said two males aged 16 and 11 entered Moulden supermarket at 6.10pm on Saturday, with the younger youth allegedly carrying a baseball bat in his shorts.

Three men allegedly target Moulden Supermarket

Police allege the older youth threatened to strike the security guard with the bat.

Two police officers arrived at the supermarket in response to an emergency call and the 16-year-old was detained while the 11-year-old fled the scene.

The older youth was taken to Palmerston watch house where he was later charged with assault worker, assault police, aggravated assault and armed with offensive weapon.

Acting Senior Sergeant Sean Patterson said the assault charges stem from the threat the youth allegedly made to the security guard.

If there is a threatened application of force and if you have the means and ability to carry out that threat, it can still be classed as an assault,” he said.

The 16-year-old was remanded to appear in court on Monday.

The 11-year-old, who was recognised by officers at the scene, was to be spoken to by police at a later date.
