A 24-year-old man is due to front court after he allegedly raped a woman near a Darwin bus stop.

An NT Police spokesman said the woman was allegedly sexually assaulted near the Casuarina bus exchange about 2.20pm Thursday.

Unlicensed driver charged after fatal crash

NT Police have arrested a woman alleging she was driving unlicensed before fatally striking a man in the Northern Suburbs.

The female driver is alleged to have struck the man and another woman near the Ludmilla McDonalds on Bagot Rd about 7pm, August 10.

The 25-year-old driver stayed at the scene until the pair was taken to hospital, with the man later dying.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit have since given her a notice to appear for driving while unlicensed.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said while both pedestrians were intoxicated at the time, the driver had still failed to follow her license conditions.

“The investigation undertaken to date has confirmed both pedestrians crossing Bagot Road were intoxicated and failed to give way to approaching vehicles,” he said.

“Notwithstanding this, police will allege the driver was not abiding by her licence conditions.

“Further investigation and forensic crash analysis by Major Crash detectives, in consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions, will determine whether additional charges are laid against the driver.”

Driver charged after pedestrian ‘flung’ off Channel Island bridge

A 34-year-old man is facing charges after he crashed into a pedestrian and threw him off a bridge.

NT Police Superintendent Daniel Shean said the 23-year-old pedestrian fell about 10m from the Elizabeth River bridge about 10.30pm Wednesday.

Superintendent Shean said the 34-year-old driver was charged with traffic-related offences.

He said the incident was still under investigation.

“It’s astounding (the pedestrian’s) injuries weren’t fatal,” he said.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, if you haven’t done so already, is urged to make contact on 131 444.

“Please quote reference 10469048.”

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the 23-year-old man’s injuries “shocked” paramedics when they found him alive following the horrific crash.

“The pedestrian’s actually been flung... through the air and actually landed at the bottom of the bridge on some rocks,” he said.

“Paramedics were quite shocked to find that he was still alive when they got there.”

Mr Garraway said the man had “quite serious” injuries from the incident on Channel Island Rd.

He said St John – with the help of CareFlight and the NT fire service – retrieved the man and took him to Royal Darwin Hospital.

“Quite a complex rescue with the tide coming in and him being in such a critical condition,” Mr Garraway said.

An NT Health spokesman said the man remained in a critical condition as of 3pm Thursday.

Man suffers nasty head injury in Ludmilla crash

Police are investigating a two-car smash on Dick Ward Drive at Ludmilla on Sunday afternoon in which a driver was taken to hospital with head injuries.

Traffic travelling inbound at Dick Ward Drive was diverted as police, fire fighters and paramedics attended the scene.

The driver of a small Suzuki 4WD travelling inbound and a Nissan SUV travelling towards Nightcliff collided about 2pm, forcing traffic to dodge between the two vehicles and another car that had parked roadside as bystanders attempted to assist the injured SUV driver.

The injured driver, who was covered in blood immediately after the incident, was being assisted by several witnesses to the incident, who were mopping blood from a nasty gash to the side of his head.

Police were speaking roadside with a young man believed to be the driver of the Suzuki as the injured man was treated by paramedics and placed in the back of an ambulance.

He was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The man’s wife arrived later at the scene and was also waiting to be spoken to by police.

The injured man is understood to be a Nightcliff resident and a popular member of the local community.

It was not clear late Sunday whether charges would be laid from the incident.
