THE life of Indigenous Territory film icon David Gulpilil has been made into a documentary, with the premiere screening of My Name is Gulpilil at the Darwin International Film Festival on Sunday.
Producer Rolf de Heer said the documentary would enlighten the audience about Gulpilil’s life, from the long grass to Hollywood.

“(The documentary) has captured his complexity,” he said.
“He’s a multi faceted, multi interesting character … when he saw the final cut of the film he was just beside himself.”
Director Molly Reynolds said the documentary was a race against time, after Gulpilil was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
“It confirms his legacy, there was only one David Gulpilil and I’d like to think we’ve embodied him. It was David who decided to make this film … we realised that we might never get to finish (with him), so we decided to finish it with him on stage instead,” Reynolds said.
