“(The documentary) has captured his complexity,” he said.

“He’s a multi faceted, multi interesting character … when he saw the final cut of the film he was just beside himself.”

Director Molly Reynolds said the documentary was a race against time, after Gulpilil was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

“It confirms his legacy, there was only one David Gulpilil and I’d like to think we’ve embodied him. It was David who decided to make this film … we realised that we might never get to finish (with him), so we decided to finish it with him on stage instead,” Reynolds said.
