An experienced skydiver has been injured after hitting the ground at an estimated 100km/h in a terrifying incident south of Darwin.
The man, a 34-year-old from South Australia, suffered multiple fractures in the accident on Tuesday.
He reportedly had a “hard landing” at the Rel Week event at Skydive Territory at Batchelor Airfield, and was transported by CareFlight to hospital.
Craig Garraway from St John NT told the NT News the man had impacted the ground at an estimated 100km/h.
Chief executive of Australian Parachuting Federation (APF) Stephen Porter confirmed the man had had a “hard landing”, but “was expected to make a full recovery”.
“This was a person who had done 4000-plus jumps and held an instructor rating — so he was not a novice,” Mr Porter said.
“Skydiving is an adventure sport and brings some risk.
“But we have the training, education and equipment to make it as safe as possible.
“We ensure excellent training and coaching to ensure our members are the best prepared they can be when jumping.
“APF extends our support to the man’s family and we will be supporting him and wishing him well in his recovery.”
The fall occurred at the annual Rel Week at Batchelor Airfield which attracts skydivers from all across Australia.
“Within APF there are many events and activities, such as Rel Week, where we provide coaching and training to our members to upskill our less experienced and provide a challenge for our more experienced skydivers.”
The REL Week organisers have been contacted for comment.
