Bikies in Australia: A short history

Charges against a woman arrested in connection to the cold case murder of panel beater Jason De Ieso have been dropped.

Prosecutors today tendered no evidence in relation to a charge of assisting an offender against the 26-year-old Reynella woman — but the reasons why the charge was withdrawn have been suppressed from publication.

Jim Pearce, prosecuting, told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday the woman’s identity should also remain suppressed “to prevent prejudice to the proper administration of justice”.

Her identity, and the identities of five men aged between 26 and 34 who are charged with Mr De Ieso’s murder and a 31-year-old Salisbury Downs man charged with assisting an offender, remain suppressed.

A review of that suppression order is expected to occur at a hearing in three weeks.

Last month, the Salisbury Downs man was released on strict home detention bail conditions, including electronic monitoring and a ban on contacting any co-accused.

Earlier last month the woman was also on bail a week after her arrest on the Gold Coast on August 2.

In a highly unusual move, the woman exited was released from the court via a side exit, instead of through the court’s front entrance.

A spokeswoman for the State Courts Administrator at the time said the “alternative exit arrangements were put it place” for “security reasons”.

None of the remaining accused have entered pleas.

Police will allege each of the men charged with murder are all current or former members or associates of the Hells Angels, and Mr De Ieso’s shooting was the culmination of an escalating feud with the Finks.

Police have previously said Mr De Ieso, 33, was an innocent bystander caught up in a dispute between rival bikie gangs.

He was not a bikie, but was friends with a man connected to the Finks.

Mr De Ieso was shot dead in his Pooraka workshop, Unique Custom Paint and Panel, on November 21, 2012.

CCTV footage from the workshop, police previously released, show nine men walking towards the front of the business on the day he was shot.

Police have previously said at least six of the men were carrying guns and that they were hoping to make further arrests.

In an emotional video released last month, Mr De Ieso’s parents, Giovanna and Sam De Ieso, described their son as a keen athlete in his younger years who loved fishing.

“It’s always with us, it never goes away and I don’t know why we have to go through this,” Mrs De Ieso said.
