Truck driver charged in relation to Kuranda Range pileup

Police are calling for dashcam vision relating to an 11 vehicle crash on the Kuranda Range earlier this week. See the shocking pictures.

Police are calling for dashcam vision relating to an 11 vehicle crash on the Kuranda Range earlier this week.

On Tuesday a truck driver allegedly responsible for pileup was charged.

Emergency services were called to the major incident on the Kuranda Range about 4.10pm on Monday, involving 10 cars and a truck.

Police allege a 46-year-old Manoora man was driving a prime mover towing a trailer, when the truck collided into the back of a line of stationary vehicles which had stopped at a road works red light near Rainforestation.

A total of 10 stationary vehicles damaged in a domino style pileup.

Two people were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

For almost seven months, two sections of the mountain road linking Smithfield and Kuranda have been reduced to one lane after large sections of the roadway crashed down the cliff during sustained heavy rainfall in mid-December.

The driver was detained for additional drug tests after he allegedly recorded a positive roadside test.

He was charged with one count each of driving without due care and attention and drug driving and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 5.

After shutting at 4.33pm, the Department of Transport and Main Roads advised at 5.55pm on Monday the road had reopened but to also expect further delays.

At the time of the crash on Monday afternoon, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed crews were responding and motorists warned of lengthy delays.

“It looks like quite a few vehicles were affected, but amazingly, no one was hurt,” the spokeswoman said.

Last night a QPS spokeswoman confirmed crews will be on the ground to assist traffic.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed crews were responding to the incident.

“It looks like a multi-vehicle incident involving a truck,” the spokesman said.

“Traffic is heavily affected.”
