The daughter of the owners of a popular karaoke bar in Adelaide’s CBD has been remanded in custody until next year after she was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs and money laundering.

Zara Ung, 34 and Jonathan Reed, 40, appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrate Court on Friday after they were arrested on August 31.

The court heard police attended a Beverly property where the couple had been living.

Jonathan Reed was refused bail.

Following a search of the property, they found more than $114k in cash, 150 grams of methamphetamine, one litre of fantasy, a small quantity of cocaine, electronic items suspected of being stolen and false identification documents.

Ms Ung, the daughter of the owners of La Sing Karaoke Bar on Gouger Street, applied for bail on Friday.

There is no suggestion the bar or Ms Ung’s parents engaged in any wrongdoing.

The court heard Ms Ung was previously sentenced for trafficking a controlled drug back in January 2020 as well as convictions for breaching bail.

The duty solicitor acting for Ms Ung, made an application for the 34-year-old to reside with her parents on home detention.

“Her parents own La Sing and she works there every weekend,” she said.

The court also heard Mr Reed was on bail for other drug trafficking charges at the time of his arrest and he had finished a suspended jail term for drug trafficking just last year.

The duty solicitor acting for Mr Reed told the court the “charges are contested” and the father of two works as a mechanic out of his home address.

“He must make an extraordinary amount of money if he has $114,000 in cash in his house,” Magistrate Jayanthi Pandya replied.

“The prosecution case against you appears to be one with some strength and you are subject to a bail agreement of the same charge … there is no form of bail that is appropriate.”

Both bail application were refused.

The couple will face court again in January.
